I am a magician, but more than that, I am a teacher. My goal is to challenge the assumptions that bind magicians to the familiar and the comfortable. I want to push the boundaries of classic close-up magic, to elevate your magic to new heights. To do this, I ask my students to forget everything they think they know— to wipe the slate clean and approach their craft with fresh eyes. In this space, there are no limits, no rules beyond the ones they create for themselves. Together, we’ll uncover the magic that lies beyond the obvious, and discover the true art of wonder.
For over 50 years, I’ve been captivated by close-up magic—especially the timeless classics with coins, bills, cards, ropes, billets, and silks. These are the types of tricks that can be performed effortlessly, straight from your pocket.
Imagine performing impromptu, mind-blowing effects with no setup or complex sleight of hand, leaving your audience in awe. Underutilized classics like the thumb tip, dye tube, Swami, or Sanada gimmick unlock a world of possibilities, offering stunning effects for magicians of all skill levels.
Consider, for example, the advanced, angle-proof vanish made possible with the thumb tip—executed with slow, deliberate, and natural movements that captivate and astound.
Further imagine an extreme close up vanish…. How close up? How is this for close up… the spectator holds or guards your closed fist with their two hands and the contents of your closed fist vanish. There is absolutely nothing they can do to prevent the magic from happening.
This is what magic should be: fun, thought-provoking, and completely unexpected.
There’s no need for quick, flashy, or exaggerated gestures—just smooth, natural movements that spark genuine wonder.
With over 150 powerful tricks in your arsenal, you can perform for hours without running out of material. Whether you're doing a 5-minute routine or engaging your audience for an entire evening, you’ll always have a diverse range of effects ready to captivate, from the simplest vanish to the most elaborate routines.
Magic is about evoking emotion—creating those moments when spectators are left saying, “Wow! I didn’t see that coming!” When performed correctly, close-up magic isn’t just thrilling—it’s profoundly rewarding, leaving audiences speechless.
Great classic close-up magic endures because it’s about creating authentic moments of wonder, not relying on rapid, flashy tricks. At its core, it’s about believability, not speed.
Now that’s magic!

Some might claim, “The thumb tip, dye tube, and Sanada are... boring.” However, these timeless classics can be revitalized and presented in captivating and unexpected ways that will leave you amazed.
As a magician, I specialize in close-up magic, showcasing timeless classics like the thumb tip, dye tube, and the Sanada.
Picture this: at a recent live lecture with forty-five magicians, two of whom have 60 years of experience, seasoned professionals watch in disbelief as I perform. They lean in, captivated, only to find themselves stunned right before their very eyes.
In the handling workshop after the performance, these veteran magicians can't help but express their astonishment: "You told us what you were going to do, and yet, we all missed it! How in the world did you pull that off?"
Their bewilderment fuels my passion, reminding me of the magic's true essence – the wonder and surprise that keeps audiences, no matter how experienced, on the edge of their seats.
And if I can fool professional magicians, just imagine the response from laymen! Their reactions are even more profound, filled with pure amazement and disbelief.
It’s a reminder that the essence of magic lies in the joy of wonder, transcending skill and experience.

Wow Hal - you have just improved my silk vanish 1000%. The insertion of the silk horizontally, the rotation of the thumb tip 90 degrees and the steal are all so much better than what I have been doing up to now. So much smoother and more natural and as you say - angle proof. I just went through it a couple of times and just need a bit more practice to get it down nicely. Really looking forward to doing this in the real world. Your ebook and your video instruction are extremely clear and thorough - just fantastic. Now I look forward to your bill switch video instruction.

Hal, I have had great success with silk vanish -- but my approach has always been the traditional one. This approach that you share is very useful though and one I will need to learn. For me, it is actually unlearning what I have done for years -- I really like the back steal since it is done on an offbeat. Thank you for sharing -- so much great instruction!

Hi All, It's been quite some time since I used my thumb tip, but Hal's manuscript, "The Thumb Tip Handling Guide," has given me the motivation to pull it out of storage. The manuscript is thorough, well-written, and you are likely to learn something you didn't know before. Don't miss this opportunity to pick it up and perform some miracles.

I'm not book type person but this book forced me to read most of it, the layout is very professional and well organized. Even I've many videos about TT and I thought I know all but I found some useful new moves in the book. The list of tricks at the end is fantastic. Thank you for this excellent book.

This clever work by Hal seems quite interesting and it's clear that he has spent a tremendous amount of time exploring and perfecting the better usage of the little tool. Perfection usually comes from focus, and so clearly Hal has had his eye uniquely on the ball, as there is also quite an impressive offering of magic on his website too.

The Power of Focus
As a budding close-up magician, my initial instinct was to collect every trick I could find. The allure of magic was intoxicating, and I was eager to explore its vast possibilities. However, despite my enthusiasm and broad approach, I soon realized that my skills didn’t match the number of tricks I possessed. I was a jack of all trades but a master of none.
Fifteen years apart, I faced two significant injuries to my hands. Each incident impacted my sense of touch and limited my range of motion, forcing me to reassess my magical journey. These challenges, while daunting, became a turning point in my practice. I could no longer attempt every trick available; instead, I had to find a way to adapt and thrive within my new physical limitations.
This is where the thumb tip, dye tube, Sanada, Swami and a few other classics of magic entered my set list to stay. These injuries also forced a refreshing focus on slow, normal, and natural handling without all the wacky fast ridiculous hand gestures many magicians utilize. I looked for and created new ways of manipulating old classics.
This newfound focus led me to streamline my repertoire. I began to concentrate on effects that were not only feasible for me to perform but also played to my strengths. By narrowing down my selection of tricks, I discovered the true essence of magic: mastery. With a limited assortment of gimmicks and techniques, I could invest my time and energy into perfecting a few key effects.
What I once viewed as a setback transformed into an invaluable lesson. The shift from a broad array of tricks to a concentrated focus on a select few allowed me to elevate my performance. I learned that excellence in magic doesn’t come from the quantity of tricks but from the quality of execution. Each effect became a canvas on which I could refine my style, presentation, and audience engagement.
The moral of my story is clear: as magicians, we should strive to master a handful of effects rather than spread ourselves too thin across many. A laser-focused approach is far more effective than a shotgun strategy. By dedicating ourselves to a few signature tricks, we not only enhance our skills but also create a more impactful and memorable experience for our audiences.
In the world of magic, less truly can be more. Embracing this philosophy not only transformed my practice but also reignited my passion for the art. As I continue my journey, I am grateful for the lessons learned through adversity and the clarity that comes from focusing on what truly matters.
